Mayberry announces bid for lieutenant governor

The sponsor of an Arkansas law banning most abortions 20 weeks into a pregnancy is seeking the Republican Party's nomination for lieutenant governor next year.

Republican Rep. Andy Mayberry of Hensley announced he's running for lieutenant governor. Mayberry is the second Republican to announce a bid for the state's No. 2 constitutional office.

Mayberry was first elected to the House in 2010 and was re-elected last year. He sponsored a measure banning most abortions 20 weeks into a pregnancy, based on the disputed notion that that's when a fetus can feel pain.

State Rep. Charlie Collins is also seeking the GOP nomination. State Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter is the only announced Democrat.

Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Darr is running for a south Arkansas congressional seat next year.
