MENA — Authorities are investigating after an inmate died over the weekend in the custody of the Polk County jail.

Authorities said 54-year-old Bryant Bullard collapsed in a one-person cell early Sunday at the jail in Mena. Arkansas State Police said Bullard was reportedly involved in a single vehicle crash at about 3 a.m. Sunday, and was taken to the jail afterward.

After his collapse at 4:40 a.m., Bullard was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead about 5 a.m. Sunday.

The cause of death is under investigation, and special agents with Arkansas State Police are investigating.

This is the second time in one month that a person was taken directly to jail from the scene of a car accident and as a result the inmate has died. People can sustain internal injuries that are not visible on the outside. They may even think they are okay at the time but in fact are injured. A person that broke the law is still a human being. It should be mandatory that in case of an accident they be transported to the hospital first then after release can be taken into custody from the hospital. This is just common sense that you would think officers of the law would already be aware of. Smh.
