by The Associated Press | April 28, 2014 at 9:46 a.m.

CLARKSVILLE — A North Little Rock woman has died after the car she was driving struck another vehicle, entered water and sank.

The Johnson County sheriff's office said the 61-year-old woman was driving west on Interstate 40 when she hit a relative's vehicle, careened into a median and entered Piney Channel between the I-40 bridges. It happened about 3 p.m. Sunday.

Witnesses entered the water and tried to reach the car but weren't able to. The search took place through hazardous conditions, including rain, lightning and tornado warnings.

Dive teams found the car in about 30 feet of water. The car was floated to the surface where the woman was pronounced dead.

Her name has not been released.

The Arkansas State Police is investigating the accident.
