A Star City linebacker who suffered a serious head injury in a 2012 football game has died.

Pulaski County coroner Gerone Hobbs said Zack Towers, 19, died shortly before 4 a.m. at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

The official cause of death hasn't been determined, but Hobbs said it was related to Towers' ongoing medical problems.

Towers collapsed from a head injury Nov. 1, 2012. He later underwent brain surgery and spent several weeks at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Towers was released from the hospital in late 2012, but supporters said he had a long path to recovery.

The most recent posting appearing Wednesday morning on the "Prayers for Zack Towers" Facebook page was on Jan. 28.

"Please remember to pray for him," the posting said. "We still have a long way to go."

Star City High School officials say they learned Wednesday morning of Towers' death and were still working on plans for a memorial at the school.
