GYMNASTICS Alabama edges Arkansas

In front of a sellout crowd of 15,075, Alabama edged Arkansas 197.125 to 196.00 Friday night in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Arkansas’ Katherine Grable won the all-around competition with a score of 39.475, which included a 9.95 on the vault and a 9.925 on the floor.

Arkansas scored a season-best 49.175 on the vault with Grable at 9.95, Stephani Canizaro posting a 9.825, Scarlett Williams at 9.80 and Amanda Wellick at 9.875.

Wellick and Shelby Salmon had scores of 9.80 on the bars. Grable, Heather Elswick and Wellick had scores of 9.925, 9.825 and 9.80 on the floor. Grable had a 9.85 on the beam followed by Sydnie Dillard’s 9.875 and Wellick’s 9.825.

UA women defeat Kansas State

Arkansas defeated Kansas State 4-2 Friday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga.

Arkansas won four of the singles matches with Shannon Hudson defeating Maria Panaite, 4-6, 6-1, (1-0) 10-7; Sarah McLean beating Palma Juhsaz, 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-6), Brittany Huxley beating Anima St. Hill, 1-6, 5-4 and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva beating Liva Cimu, 6-3, 7-5.

In doubles, Huxley and Kimberly-Ann Surin beat Petra Niedermayerova and Juhasz, 4-3; Yang Pang and Shkorupeieva defeated Palaite and Iva Bago, 6-2 and Hudson and McLeane beat St. Hill and Cimu, 6-2.

Arkansas men fall to Dartmouth

Arkansas lost 4-3 to Dartmouth on Friday in Stillwater, Okla.

Arkansas won three singles matches. Hall Fess defeated Brandon DeBot, 6-5 (5), 6-5 (5). Santiago Munoz defeated Cameron Ghorbani, 6-4, 2-6, 6-5 (4) and Johan den Toom defeated Sam Todd, 4-6,6-5 (7), 6-2.

Arkansas’ lone doubles victory came from Nott and den Toom, who defeated Ghorbani and Tannerbaum 6-5 (5).

BASKETBALL Hendrix falls on the road

Birmingham-Southern College defeated Hendrix College’s men 83-50 in Birmingham Friday night.

Birmingham used an 18-4 run over the final 6:57 of the first half to lead 39-17 at halftime. The host Panthers shot 57.7 percent from the field, including 11 of 24 on three pointers. Hendrix was held to 36.5-percent, field-goal shooting.

Colton Primm led Hendrix (7-9 1-4 Southern Athletic Association) with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Larry Thomas led Birmingham-Southern (9-6. 3-2) with 20 points and six rebounds.
