Missouri father charged after son's heroin overdose death

BONNE TERRE, Mo. — An eastern Missouri man is charged with second-degree murder after allegedly using heroin with his 19-year-old son, then refusing to help when his son overdosed on the drug and died.

Authorities say 41-year-old James V. Kobermann of Bonne Terre is jailed in lieu of $250,000 bond. Police say he bought heroin and shared at with James V. Kobermann Jr. on July 1.

The younger man overdosed, but police say the father would not allow others in the home to call for help out of fear that he would be accused of supplying his son with the drug.

The next day, after the senior Kobermann left for work, others noticed his son was not breathing and called 911. James Kobermann Jr. was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.
