Robbery suspect critical after being shot by LR police

A robbery suspect was left in critical condition early Wednesday after police shot him because he pointed a handgun at them, authorities said.

Police say the man, whose name has not been released, robbed the Mapco Max Mart at 8101 Stagecoach Road in Little Rock about 2:40 a.m., escaping into nearby woods with cash and beer.

Little Rock Police Department Lt. Sidney Allen said in a statement that a police dog led officers to the man, but he refused to drop a handgun he was holding.

"Officers released the K-9 unit on the suspect twice, but the suspect retained his weapon and pointed it at officers," police wrote. "One officer fired upon the suspect, striking him multiple times."

The man was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in critical condition.

Allen said a criminal and internal investigation into the shooting would be conducted. The officer who opened fire was placed on administrative leave.

Police say they have identified the robbery suspect but are not releasing his name yet. He is described in the report only as a white man.

No officers were injured.
