DANCING INTO DREAMLAND

Zombies choreograph victory by thrilling ballroom audience

Zombies invaded the Dreamland Ballroom on Nov. 7 and took home a first-place trophy.

Dance groups Shuffles and Ballet II with featured dancers Rico Sergent and Hope Wenneker performed to Michael Jackson's Thriller at the fifth annual Dancing Into Dreamland. While Sergent and Wenneker were in the spotlight, dance troupe zombies crept through the crowd surprising audience members.

After the performance, competition judge David Miller, host of the radio show Swingin' Down the Lane, proclaimed the performance wonderful, while judge Dorothy Graves, host of another radio show, Science Cafe, noted it was by far her favorite version of the dance.

The night's other crowd-pleaser was an energetic tap dance by Lauren Middleton and Lauren Rodriguez. Judge Christen Pitts, a dance teacher, was impressed by the duo's "nice, clean sounds." Miller said the coordination between the two was "nothing short of miraculous." The pair are members of the Dance Dynamics Dance Company and received the People's Choice Award.

Serving as masters of ceremonies were Clea Hupp and Poolboy. Event chairman was Cindy Steele. Money raised from the event hosted by Friends of Dreamland Ballroom will go toward installing an elevator which would allow better access to the third-floor ballroom in the historic Taborian Hall.
