BIG BEND RANCH STATE PARK, Texas -- A chilling wind swept across the Chihuahuan Desert, as I repeatedly clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering.

Last October, Cathy Frye and her husband, Rick McFarland, wandered off a trail in southwest Texas. Out of food and water, the exhausted pair pressed on in search of help.

    Not trying to be smart, but I never go into the outback without 2 GPS units, 1 is my smartphone and an old fashion compass and a .40 S&W pistol and plenty of water.
