TRAFFIC ALERT: Accident slowing traffic on I-40 in Prairie County

A traffic accident on Interstate 40 westbound in Prairie County on Thursday afternoon has delayed traffic, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials say.

Westbound traffic is now being diverted at mile marker 202 onto Arkansas 70 near Fredonia because of the accident, which happened near mile marker 199, officials posted on social media.

Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said about 1:30 p.m. he knew state troopers were working to clear a motor vehicle crash somewhere near the area, which could take some time.

Shortly after 2 p.m., Highway and Transportation Department officials said via social media that I-40 at mile marker 194 has been "temporarily closed" because of a propane leak and diesel spill. Traffic from that area has also been diverted onto Arkansas 70.
