Priorities for a healthier Arkansas

Gov. Asa Hutchinson unveiled a 10-year plan Wednesday for helping Arkansans lose weight and become more fit. Developed by government, business and health care leaders, the plan spells out nine priority areas.

• Encourage the creation of livable spaces that improve mobility, availability and access.

• Ensure uniform access to healthful foods and beverages to consumers in all settings.

• Provide food and beverages in government, early child care and educational settings that align with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and promote health and learning.

• Ensure that all students, from early child care through college, have opportunities for daily physical activity and physical education that promote healthy lifestyles.

• Establish workplaces that promote good health through prevention, reduce health care costs related to chronic illness and disability, and improve employee productivity.

• Promote education, public policies and access to affordable healthful foods for all Arkansans.

• Adopt strategies to reduce overconsumption of sugar-sweetened beverages.

• Support and increase the proportion of mothers who breastfeed.

• Implement a communications and marketing program aimed at improving physical activity and nutrition.
