THE PHILANTHROPY OF HOPE

Landers' generosity steers more kudos in his direction

One might wonder whether car dealer Steve Landers has a storage unit chock-full of the awards and citations he has been given for his philanthropy. (Perhaps next to the one for bobbleheads used as a running joke in his humorous car commercials?)

Landers was presented with the MS Hope Award at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's annual fundraiser, A Vintage Affair for MS. The event took place Sept. 17 at Next Level Events in Little Rock.

Garver, an engineering, planning, and environmental services firm, was presented the Philanthropic Business of the Year Award, and Dan Williams, Garver's president and chief executive officer, was there to accept it.

Former state legislator and past Hope Award winner Shane Broadway introduced the honoree, using anecdotes that included the story of Broadway's first car, a Landers Auto Sales purchase. "A canary yellow, 1976, Bicentennial Edition Ford LTD ... as long as from here to the state Capitol. We got 24 people in that thing at a time." Broadway also shared a humorous tale about the first campaign contribution he got from Landers while praising him for his kindness and philanthropy through the years. "He has given hope to a lot of people over the years in a lot of different ways."

Landers used his brief thank-you speech to credit his wife, Sandy, for keeping him focused -- and urge the audience to keep the evening's cause in mind. Said cause, according to the estimation of society representative Tina Ward, is now more than $40,000 richer thanks to A Vintage Affair.
