Armed man fatally shot by sheriff's deputy in Pope County, police say

An armed man was fatally shot by authorities after he fired a weapon toward sheriff's deputies Thursday afternoon in Pope County, Arkansas State Police said.

State police are investigating the shooting, which was reported to have occurred around 3:10 p.m. at a residence in the 2200 block of Morgan Road in the Dover area.

According to a state police news release, the man who was shot — whose name has not been released — confronted arriving officers while armed with a gun and ignored orders to drop the weapon. Instead, he "moved to cover and opened fire toward the deputies," the release said. No lawmen were hit.

At least one deputy returned fire, the release said, striking the armed man. He later died from his injuries at a Russellville hospital.
