Texarkana attorney, former state speaker of House dies at 84

Hayes McClerkin, a prominent Texarkana attorney and former speaker of the Arkansas House of Representatives, has died at age 84, according to a family member.

His daughter Lauren McClerkin said her father died peacefully at his Texarkana home about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday of natural causes.

"He was very, very strong in the community and with his family," she said. "He had a passion for living and a passion for giving."

According to the House of Representatives website, Hayes McClerkin, a Democrat, served as speaker during the 67th General Assembly. He was a member of the House from 1961 to 1970.

Details are pending for a funeral service at First Presbyterian Church in Texarkana, Lauren McClerkin said.
