50-plus $2 bills stolen from Arkansas home

The Faulkner County sheriff's office is advising residents, particularly business owners, in central Arkansas to be on watch for $2 bills stolen late last month from a homeowner whose residence is for sale.

Sheriff's office spokesman Adam Bledsoe said between 50 and 75 $2 bills were stolen around Dec. 23 from a residence at 38 Harmony Road South in a rural area of south Faulkner County and are considered of significant value given their year of issuance.

Historically, $2 bills, first issued by the federal government in 1862, are more uncommon than their U.S. currency counterparts currently in circulation, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

The particular bills sought are dated the year of the U.S. bicentennial, 1976, the sheriff's office said.

At that time, $2 bills featured a portrayal of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence on the back of the bill, the treasury department states on its website.

A neighbor across the street at Harmony Road South called authorities about 6:40 a.m. Dec. 23 to notify them that the garage door at the victim's home was open and that a light was flashing, according to a Faulkner County sheriff's office report.

Responding at the scene, sheriff's deputies said they also noticed a rear door open, with signs of forced entry.

"The door frame was broken and the trim from the interior was leaning against the wall next to the door," the report states.

In addition to the $2 bills stolen from the residence, two iPhones, two laptop computers, a fireproof safe, a watch, a wooden jewelry box, a jar with collected coins and an iPad adapter were also reported as stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at (501) 450-4917.
