Parade, speeches set for holiday

Several events will be held to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. in Pulaski County on Monday, including:

• The 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Monday. The NAACP-organized parade starts at Interstate Park and ends at the Arkansas Capitol about noon. Speakers, starting at noon, include former Pulaski County Circuit Judge Marion Humphrey; the Rev. Arthur Hunt, director of the College of Aspiring Artists; and Stanley Barnes, director of the Reach and Rise mentoring program. The parade's grand marshal will be Robert "Say" McIntosh, activist, businessman and spiritual leader.

• The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center's annual day of service. The center encourages youth ages 12 to 18 to participate by volunteering at one of six community sites. Projects include sorting donated pantry items, preparing a garden, making crafts with senior citizens, cleaning and picking up trash, and raking leaves. Sites are: Millennium Adult Day Care, the Young Adult Opportunity Center, Oakland Fraternal Cemetery, Helping Hand of Greater Little Rock, Dunbar Community Garden and the Little Rock Compassion Center. Participation is free, but youths are asked to register online at www.mosaictemplarscenter.com/mlk-challenge-registration. • King-Obama Cookout, 11:30 a.m., 18th and Spring Street, Little Rock, organized by Darrell Stephens Grassroots, a community organization that states that it focuses on ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

• NAACP National President and CEO Cornell William Brooks will speak about the future of the organization and a new initiative to protect voting rights in the 2016 election at 4 p.m., Bethel A.M.E. Church, 600 N. Cedar St., North Little Rock.

• The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission "A Day of Service" events, 6:30 a.m.-3 p.m. at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Jack Stephens Center, 2801 South University Ave. Admission is free. Arun Gandhi, grandson of the late Mahatma Gandhi, and a free family comedy show featuring Marlon Wayans are among activities scheduled. Others are an interfaith prayer breakfast, lunch for the poor, and services such as health screenings, job counseling and hygiene kits. • University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service student Akaylah Jones and Clinton School graduate Calandra Davis lead a peace-building workshop from 9-11 a.m. at the Jericho Way Resource Center, 3000 Springer Blvd., Little Rock.
