Arkansas National Guard reports death of soldier

FORT SMITH — The Arkansas National Guard says a soldier has died while training at Fort Chaffee in western Arkansas.

The guard said in a statement that 32-year-old Sgt. Sylvester B. Cline of Pine Bluff died Tuesday night at a Fort Smith hospital. Cline was assigned to Company A, 39th Brigade Support Battalion of the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

The guard said Cline's cause of death is under investigation but that it wasn't caused by a weapon or vehicle accident. Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Joel Lynch said Cline had served in combat in Iraq in 2008 and was awarded the Iraq Campaign medal and a Global War on Terror Service medal.

The guard said Cline worked as a maintenance worker in Pine Bluff and leaves behind four children.
