A shooting in Hot Springs left one person in critical condition Monday night, and a man arrested later was also taken to the hospital after police said he shot himself while fleeing.

Hot Springs police spokesman Cpl. Kirk Zaner said 40-year-old Eric Shaw of Hot Springs was arrested in a nearby Malvern motel and taken to National Park Hospital, where he was treated before being booked into the Garland County jail Tuesday morning.

Shaw accidentally shot himself in the leg while putting the gun in his waistband and fleeing from the shooting, Zaner said.

Police responding to the report of a shooting on Bayles Street around 8:15 p.m. found Robert Alexander, 53, shot in his torso and lying in the entrance to the house, according to a news release.

Alexander, whose listed residence is at the Bayles Street address, was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in critical condition.

Shaw was charged with first-degree battery and had bond set at $100,000, jail records show.
