HOPE ABOUNDS

Herculean humanitarianism: Fundraiser for Syrian school, center a success — times four

With a goal of raising $2,000 to support humanitarian efforts in Syria, The Wisdom House Project hosted an Evening of Hope on July 27 at Bernice Garden. Through donations and raffles, the event surpassed that goal and raised $8,000 for the project.

The Wisdom House Project helps finance a school for orphans -- The Wisdom House -- and a women's center called Tomorrow's Dawn for women widowed by war. The goal of $2,000 would pay for new English books, laptops and sewing machines for the women's center. Outreach director Natalie Larrison says the extra money raised will pay for operating costs and salaries at the school for two months.

The evening included a buffet dinner provided by La Hacienda; iced coffee from Starbucks; local vendors; music by the band 2 & 1 with Brian Cato, Mica Turner and Steve Mangan; and entertainment from Dako Albeit, a Syrian refuge living in Little Rock who performed magic tricks.
