Orchids

The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at noon Dec. 9 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The group will elect officers and board members and award members accumulating highest total points for monthly plant judging. The day will also include the annual holiday luncheon and "Dirty Santa" orchid-related gift exchange.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

Computers

The Bella Vista Computer Club general meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 10 in Room 1001 on the lower level of Highlands Crossing Center, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista. Mike Whited, senior vice president and sales coordinator for Arvest Bank, will be the featured speaker. Whited will provide the latest information on security, scams, the Arvest "GO" mobile app and other topics. There will be a question-and-answer opportunity at the meeting.

Club meetings are free and open to the public.

BVCC members can take free classes on computer topics selected by the club. They also receive free help for any computerized device at twice monthly help clinic sessions held the first Saturday and the third Wednesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon in the BVCC's training center at the Highlands Crossings Center, Suite 208. Members are also eligible for free remote online support at other times. The next help clinic sessions are Dec. 19 and Jan. 5.

The yearly membership is $20 for the first member in a household and $10 for each additional member in the same household. Pre-registration is required to attend classes. December classes will be "Computer Security for Regular People: Basic Concepts" and "Slow PC? Let's Upgrade or Buy New."

Writers

The Village on the Lakes Writers and Poets will hold their Christmas party from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at Fred's Hickory Inn in Bentonville. Spouses and guests are invited. The club will be collecting young adolescent books for donation for Lincoln Junior High students in grades 7 and 8. Books should be wrapped individually with a card or note inside each book.

Ko-ko-ci

The Ko-ko-ci Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society will hold its meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Washington County Cooperative Extension Office, 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville, behind the Arkansas Archeological Survey building and across from the Washington County Fairgrounds entrance.

Guest speakers will be Carl Drexler and Fiona Taylor. They will present "Caddo Settlements in the Little River Basin: The 2019 Arkansas Archeological Society Training Program." The 2019 Training Program of the Arkansas Archeological Society will add to knowledge of the area by focusing on two different sites of the Little River Basin area, Holman Springs and Lockesburg Mounds sites. The former was a massive saltworks, the latter one of the largest mound sites in the region. This talk will sketch the history of these two sites and give an overview of tasks for next summer.

VFW

There will be a Veterans of Foreign Wars holiday essay awards dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Dec. 13 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale.

With more than 150 entries from Washington County, the Voice of Democracy awards go to C.J. Parrish, from Har-Ber High School, first place; Warren J. McCombs from Fayetteville High School, second place; and Miguel Jimenez from Central Junior High, third place.

The Patriots Pen category had more than 300 entries, and winners were Myron S. Erks from Southwest Junior High in first place; Isabelle N. Eursery from CJHS, in second place; and Carlee Ann Gladden from CJHS in third place.

These students will receive a check for placement as follows: $100 for first, $75 for second and $50 for third place.

NARFE

Bella Vista Chapter 1547 of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will hold the next monthly meeting at 10 a.m. Dec. 14 in the Community Room of Guaranty Bank, 21196 U.S. 71 South in Pineville, Mo., just past Walmart.

This will be the annual Christmas party with entertainment by the Bella Vista Women's Chorus singing a variety of holiday music. All current and retired federal employees and their spouses are welcome.
