A 40-year-old man who was fatally shot Thursday night appears to have been killed during a home invasion, Arkansas State Police said, citing a preliminary investigation.

Authorities said "initial statements" gathered at the scene indicated that Jeffery L. Baker "forcefully entered" a home on South LaSalle Street in Rector, after which the homeowner shot him.

Baker died at the scene. His body, which police found in the home around 8:10 p.m., was sent to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy.

The homeowner wasn't identified in a state police news release. A statement from the Clay County sheriff's office said that a "person of interest" was interviewed, and it noted that state police are still investigating.

Another unarmed criminal killed by a "good guy with a gun." Do they not sell baseball bats and tazers anymore? Not saying its okay to be an unarmed criminal, but shouldn't deadly force ONLY be met with deadly force? Since when was DEATH the punishment for stealing? Nobody values human life anymore

How did he know he was unarmed? Did he look at him and say "Hey Mr. Scumbag who broke into my house, are you armed? I need to know so I can decide the show of force I am supposed to use. I also want to give you a chance to pull a gun in case you have one so it's a fair fight."

Assuming the initial report was correct, good shoot. Anytime a home is invaded by force or deception to commit a crime, a legal occupant can blow him away -- legally.

Well said Raylan. Dawg, the answer to your question since when was DEATH the punishment for stealing?, is every time you break into my house. To the homeowner, well done, in a town as small as Rector, I seriously doubt that you will have any other issues with people breaking into your home.

So home owners don't get killed in burglaries? My point was missed by you cowards who can't defend yourselves. The intruder was unarmed....had he been armed, this home owner is dead. Guns aren't on a "good side" or bad side....only the side of the person packing. This intruder was killed, but next week it'll be an armed criminal who kills an unarmed resident....or resident who simply cant get to his gun

LRDawg, are you by chance a parolee? A probationer?

If the people really thought that crime was coming under control, they’d more than likely negotiate on gun control.
