A 40-year-old Arkansas man was in stable condition Saturday after being shot by officers who were called to a disturbance in Gravette, authorities said.
Arkansas State Police said in a statement that Eulas Linwood Hughes III of Gravette was reported to have pointed a gun at officers at a residence on 2nd Avenue.
Police were dispatched there shortly before 3:45 p.m. and found Hughes with a handgun and a long gun, the statement said.
"As negotiations between law enforcement personnel and Hughes occurred in an attempt to have him drop the guns, Hughes began to attempt entry into the home," the statement said. "At that time he is said to have pointed one of the guns at officers who then fired wounding Hughes."
Benton County sheriff’s office deputies and officers with the Gravette and Sulphur Springs police departments responded to the disturbance, though no details on which officers opened fire were immediately released.
State police are investigating the shooting.
