Carla Hayden, the first female and the first black librarian of the Library of Congress, was in Little Rock on July 29 for a tour of the city and a reception.

Guests met Hayden at the reception hosted at the Heights home of Martha and U.S. Rep. French Hill. Hayden's mother, Helena-native Colleen Hayden, accompanied her daughter. Colleen's childhood friend, Anthonette Akins of Pine Bluff, was her guest.

Hayden was sworn in as the 14th librarian of Congress on Sept. 14, 2016. Hayden was nominated to the position by President Barack Obama on Feb. 24, 2016, and her nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in July of that year.

Guests at the reception included U.S. Rep. Bruce Westerman and his wife, Sharon.
