Man fatally shot while in driver's seat of vehicle in Little Rock, police say

A Little Rock man was fatally shot in the driver’s seat of his vehicle Saturday night while his brother was just a few feet away, police said.

Maurice Culberson, 64, dropped his brother off at around 10:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of Jefferson Street when a witness said two young men ran up to the car, fired multiple shots into Culberson’s upper chest and fled on foot, according to Little Rock police spokesman Steve Moore.

Culberson’s brother, who Moore said is roughly the same age as Culberson, had not made it into his residence yet and was outside when the shooting happened.

Officers arrived on scene and provided aid to Culberson and MEMS transported him to the UAMS Medical Center, but he later died from his injuries, according to a police report.

Crime scene search units and detectives responded to the scene Saturday night.

According to a police report, Culberson was in his 2003 Lincoln Town Car at the time of the shots. Moore said a motive for the shooting is not known as of yet, but that officers are investigating a robbery angle.

Culberson is the 21st Little Rock homicide victim in 2018. This time last year, Little Rock police had investigated 26 homicides.
