Little Rock man behind wheel slain by 2 gunmen; robbery eyed as possible motive in city's 21st killing of year

A Little Rock man was fatally shot in the driver's seat of his vehicle Saturday night while his brother was just a few feet away.

Maurice Culberson, 64, dropped his brother off at about 10:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of Jefferson Street when, a witness said, two young men ran up to the car, fired multiple shots into Culberson's upper chest and fled on foot, Little Rock police spokesman Steve Moore said.

Culberson's brother was outside when the shooting happened.

Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services transported him to UAMS Medical Center, but he later died from his injuries, according to a police report.

According to a police report, Culberson was in his 2003 Lincoln Towncar at the time of the shots. Moore said a motive for the shooting was not known but that officers are investigating a robbery angle.

Culberson is the 21st Little Rock homicide victim in 2018. At this time last year, Little Rock police had investigated 26 homicides.
