A man was extricated from a sewer in Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday, officials said.

A bystander in the area of Fifth and Block streets in Fayetteville heard the man yelling for help from below the surface. Fayetteville firefighters and emergency personnel extricated him from a manhole around 9 a.m..

Thomas Good, assistant fire chief, said the man said he crawled in and remained there overnight. Responders think the man was drug- or alcohol-impaired, Good said.
