Suspect arrested in Newark killing

A 33-year-old Newark man has been arrested in Monday's shooting death of a 27-year-old Newport man, according to a news release from Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens.

John Goodman is being held in lieu of $1 million bond, according to the release. He was in the Independence County jail in Batesville late Tuesday, but an officer at the jail wouldn't confirm whether Goodman remained there late Wednesday. At 7:20 a.m. Monday, deputies responded to an address on North Locust Street in Newark. They found the body of Steven Reed lying on the floor, according to the release.

Investigators have interviewed the suspect and two witnesses. The case is still under investigation, according to the release.

Prosecuting Attorney Holly Meyer said first-degree murder charges have been filed against Goodman. Meyer said she expects a bail hearing to be held Monday.
