Whalum headlines 'ART'; Weezer in concert at AMP

Saxophonist Kirk Whalum, singer Martha Burks, and, in his Little Rock debut, "Sweet Lu" Olutosin, highlight Art Porter Music Education Inc.'s eighth annual "A Work of ART," this week at venues throughout Little Rock.

The weeklong event honors the memory of the late Art Porter Sr., a jazz pianist, entertainer, educator and television producer, and his late son, jazz saxophonist Art Porter Jr. The nonprofit also operates the Art Porter Music Institute, which includes Minors in Music workshops; the "Lil' Emcees" program that fosters public speaking skills; and a $3,000 renewable scholarship.

• Noon Monday: Kickoff, Little Rock City Hall, featuring Minors in Music. Free

• Noon Tuesday: Minors in Music, River Market Pavilion, 400 President Clinton Ave., Little Rock. Free

• 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday: Martha Burks, Cajun's Wharf, 2400 Cantrell Road, Little Rock. $35-$50

• 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday: "Sweet Lu" Olutosin, Khalil's Pub & Grill, 110 S. Shackleford Road, Little Rock. $40

• 8 p.m. Friday: Porter Players Jam Session, 109 & Co., 109 Main St., Little Rock. Free

8 p.m. Saturday: Kirk Whalum, plus APME's 2018 scholarship recipient, Daniel Johnson II from Watson Chapel High School, and other student entertainment, including violinist and Porter heir Lexington Porter, now part of a new group -- G-Music, consisting in part of former Minors in Music. Weezer at AMP

Weezer, with the Pixies, performs at 7:30 p.m. today at the Walmart AMP, 5079 W. Northgate Road, Rogers. Doors open at 5:30. Tickets are $34.50-$75.

Also this week, part of the amphitheater's 2018 Cox Concert Series:

• Coheed and Cambria and Taking Back Sunday, with special guest The Story So Far, perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Doors open at 5:30. Tickets are $29.50-$59.50 plus fees; for the "LAWN 4-PACK," four lawn tickets bought at the same time, $22.50 apiece.

• Country singer-songwriter Luke Bryan, on his "What Makes You Country" tour, performs at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Gates open at 5:30. Tickets are $56-$106.

'Conspire to Inspire'

"Conspire to Inspire" -- works by artists in the Collage for Living's Fine Arts Program -- opens with a reception, 5-9 p.m. Thursday, at Stage Eighteen, 18 E. Center St.. Fayetteville. WWI seminar

The Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee and the Old State House Museum will host a seminar, "The War to End All Wars: The Legacies of World War I and Arkansas," 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 18 at the museum, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock.

Thomas A. DeBlack, Jeannie Whayne, Brian K. Mitchell, Ray Screws and Roger Pauly will deliver lectures on the 1918 influenza epidemic, connections of World War I with the suffragist movement and the Elaine Massacre, World War I training facilities and how World War I led to World War II. SoNA season

The Symphony of Northwest Arkansas opens its six-concert 2018-19 season with an all-orchestral concert, titled "Bernstein & Brahms," 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3 in Baum Walker Hall, Walton Arts Center, 495 W. Dickson St., Fayetteville.

The program will include "Come un sogno" from Symphony No. 7 by Einojuhani Rautavaara; Three Dance Episodes from On the Town by Leonard Bernstein; and the Symphony No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. Music Director Paul Haas conducts.

The rest of the lineup (except as noted, all concerts, 7:30 p.m., Baum Walker Hall, with Haas on the podium):

• Dec. 15: "A Very SoNA Christmas," also featuring the SoNA Singers, regional high school choirs and guest soloists, 2 and 7:30 p.m.

• Dec. 16: "The Snowman: A Family Concert." A screening of the animated film, marking the 40th anniversary of Raymond Briggs' classic children's book on which it's based, with the orchestra performing the musical score.

• Jan. 26: "Verdi & Chopin." Pianist Andrew Tyson solos in Frederic Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2. The program also includes Giuseppe Verdi's Overture to La Forza del Destino and Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3, "Rhenish."

• March 9: "Beethoven & Bach." SoNA violinists Zsolt Eder and Miho Oda Sakon solo in J.S. Bach's Concerto for Two Violins. Also on the program: High Windows by Christopher Cerrone and the Symphony No. 2 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

• May 4: "The Rite of Spring." Cellist Edgar Moreau solos in the Variations on a Rococo Theme by P.I. Tchaikovsky; the orchestra will also play Sensemaya by Silvestre Revueltas and Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring.
