Eats for Education: 15th annual Cooking for College a tasty way to raise scholarship money

College students may only wish they could eat this well while at school. But at least those who benefit from Cooking for College have help with their education costs.

The 15th annual Cooking for College took place June 8 at what is now Horace Mann Arts and Science Magnet Middle School. Again it was hosted by the Horace Mann Transitional Class of 1972, the last class of juniors to attend what was Horace Mann High School before it closed due to Little Rock School District desegregation efforts. Proceeds from the event support the Edwin L. Hawkins "I Challenge You" Scholarship, named after the late principal of Horace Mann High.

Chefs served up such varied delicacies as tossed salad, smoked salmon, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, spicy meatballs with rice, cabbage, yams, chicken Alfredo pasta, shrimp and grits, pound cake, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, strawberries Romanoff, German chocolate cake and fruit.

This year's event included the first Student Chef Cookoff, featuring students of University of Arkansas-Pulaski Technical College's Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Institute. Attendees paid $2 each to sample Ciara King's Garlic Shrimp Capellini and Gary Tucker's Lobster Ravioli. King won the trophy.

The feast was preceded by a silent auction and a program steered by E. Curtis Hooks and featuring a speech by state Rep. Fred Allen, D-Little Rock, along with a trip down memory lane and words of inspiration by retired basketball coach and Arkansas Sports Hall of Famer Oliver Elders.

Presented with scholarships of $1,000 each were Jasmine Bland, a student at Henderson State University, and Nicholas Davenport, a student at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.

Class members Bruce Brown and Larry Gilbert received awards for their support of the scholarship.
