Meetings to focus on plastic-free goal

A Little Rock group is hosting an informal meeting Monday for those interested in going plastic-free at the Green Corner Store.

Plastic Free Little Rock: Building a Waste Free City has invited anyone interested in reducing their plastic use or banning single-use plastics in the city to attend a 5:30 p.m. meeting at the store at 1423 Main St., Suite D.

A second meeting will be held at the same time and place July 23.

Vice Mayor Kathy Webb will be at Monday's meeting. The Little Rock Citizens Climate Lobby is also involved.

Plastic Free Little Rock describes itself as a "meet-up group" that discusses ways to simplify and eliminate waste in personal lifestyles and to encourage the local government and businesses to act on waste. The group believes step No. 1 is to go plastic-free.

Grant backs city's fiscal literacy work

The city of Little Rock won a $10,000 grant from a U.S. Conference of Mayors program to continue its efforts to teach youths financial literacy within city-funded programs.

About 2,100 youths participate each year in Little Rock's summer programs, after-school programs or other enhancement programs.

The city partners with Junior Achievement to teach the youths about budgets, credit scores, credit and debit cards, decision making, gross income, opportunity cost and financial risk. Enhanced skills are taught to the 750 students who participate in the city's summer youth employment program.

The city plans to use the $10,000 from DollarWise: Mayors for Financial Literacy to expand its teachings. The city is also seeking local corporate sponsors to help fund its "Currency Crash Course."

The DollarWise program recognized the city for its "outstanding commitment to financial education."
