• The city of Maumelle is exploring the possibility of annexing the Morgan area at Interstate 40 and Arkansas 365, which has experienced a business boom in recent years. Maumelle is looking at the area because of the growing number of businesses and an outdated sewer plant that is in violation of Environmental Protection Agency regulations, City Manager Gerald Boon said. Several businesses have been built in the Morgan interchange area in recent years, including a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, a McDonald's and three convenience stores. A sign on a recently cleared lot notes a Waffle House is next. The Morgan interchange is a little less than a mile northeast of Maumelle. The city already has extraterritorial jurisdiction over the Morgan business area, meaning it controls planning and zoning.

• When more than 400,000 Arkansas hunters hit the woods for the opening of deer season today, it's ever more likely that some among them have already encountered a deer long before they settled into their deer stands. Only those encounters were between deer and cars and trucks. Arkansas ranks fifth in the nation in the frequency of deer-vehicle collisions, according to a leading insurance company. Only West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Iowa had a higher likelihood of deer-vehicle collisions, according to State Farm Insurance Co., which has about 500,000 auto policyholders in Arkansas.
