Pen to Podium

Fort Smith-born historian and newspaper columnist Ben Boulden will discuss a historic women's strike in Fort Smith, based on material from his book Hidden History of Fort Smith, Arkansas, for a Pen to Podium lecture, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Diamond Conference Room, Department of Arkansas Heritage, 1100 North St., Little Rock. A strike by female telephone operators that started Nov. 13, 1917, spurred a general strike, ended up ousting the mayor and indirectly led to Arkansas women being allowed to vote before the federal government gave women the right. It's part of the Arkansas Historical Writers' Lecture Series through the Arkansas State Archives. The Friends of the Arkansas State Archives will host a pre-lecture reception in the lobby. Admission is free. Call (501) 682-6900.
