Pen to Podium
Fort Smith-born historian and newspaper columnist Ben Boulden will discuss a historic women's strike in Fort Smith, based on material from his book Hidden History of Fort Smith, Arkansas, for a Pen to Podium lecture, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Diamond Conference Room, Department of Arkansas Heritage, 1100 North St., Little Rock. A strike by female telephone operators that started Nov. 13, 1917, spurred a general strike, ended up ousting the mayor and indirectly led to Arkansas women being allowed to vote before the federal government gave women the right. It's part of the Arkansas Historical Writers' Lecture Series through the Arkansas State Archives. The Friends of the Arkansas State Archives will host a pre-lecture reception in the lobby. Preservation Awards
Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola will present Greater Little Rock Preservation Awards at the Quapaw Quarter Association's annual membership meeting, Wednesday at the Historic Arkansas Museum, 200 E. Third St., Little Rock. The event opens with a 5:30 p.m. reception and a brief business meeting. The award winners:
• George Collins for the rehabilitation of 601 and 615 Willow St. in North Little Rock's Argenta National Register Historic District.
• Little Rock City Manager Bruce Moore and Cindy Doramus, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Central Arkansas, for the restoration of the WPA Stone Bridges behind Little Rock's Lamar Porter Field.
• John Bowyer, Joy Scates and consultant Antoinette Johnson for the rehabilitation of the Farrell House No. 2, 2111 Louisiana St., Little Rock, in the Governor's Mansion Historic District.
• Jennifer Carman and Donna Thomas for the rehabilitation of the Mills Davis House, 523 E. Sixth St., in Little Rock's MacArthur Park Historic District
• Save Hillcrest! for grassroots advocacy efforts to halt teardowns of historically significant properties in the Hillcrest Historic District and adoption of stronger tools to preserve the neighborhood's historic character.
• The Mitchell School rehabilitation in the Central High School Neighborhood, led by Chad Young, WD&D Architects.
• Main Street Lofts
• Peg Smith Award, to the members of the association's Spring Tour of Homes Street Committee, James Metzger, Jeremiah Gardner and Mike Metzler. The award has gone each year since 1980 to an association member for exemplary volunteer work.
• Tom Wilkes Award for outstanding service on the association board of directors, to retiring board member Laura Sergeant.
