2 Arkansas plants given multimillion-dollar defense work

The U.S. Department of Defense last week awarded contracts to two contractors with plants in East Camden's Highland Industrial Park.

American Rheinmetall Munition Inc., based in Stafford, Va., was awarded a $59.7 million contract to produce up to 2.1 million cartridges for high-velocity day-night practice grenades at its plant in East Camden. The practice grenades will be used by the Marines. The work is to be completed by Sept. 25, 2022, according to the Department of Defense.

The department also announced a $395 million modification to a previous contract with Raytheon Missile Systems, which has a plant in East Camden, to manufacture missiles deployed on U.S. Navy cruisers and destroyers and all spare parts. The original contract was for $235 million.

The Department of Defense said 31 percent of the work will be done at Raytheon's plant in East Camden, with other work at 17 other Raytheon plants. That work also is to be completed by September 2022.
