Student IDs double as cards for library

Student identification cards for North Little Rock School District students will now double as library cards within the William F. Laman Public Library System, the library system announced.

The change will affect more than 8,600 students in the district's schools, a library news release said.

"We're so happy to get library cards in the hands of every student," Crystal Gates, the library system's executive director, said in the release. "They are not required to get a separate library card with us. But, if they want to have access to more physical resources at once, they can."

The library has offered eCards to high school students in the past that allowed students to access electronic resources and computers. With the school district partnership, students will be able to check out up to two physical items as well.

Those wishing to check out more than two physical items may continue to use or apply for a traditional library card, according to the announcement.

"Students are now automatically loaded into our system as a student patron unless a parent or guardian requests in writing that their ID be removed from our library system and borrowing privileges revoked," Gates said.

This is the latest action to help remove barriers to library access. Early this year, Laman Library and its Argenta Branch stopped charging late fees for overdue items.

Laman Library is at 2801 Orange St. The Argenta Branch library is at 420 Main St. For hours and more information on library services and programs, visit lamanlibrary.org.

Christmas Parade applications open

Applications are being accepted for entrants in the annual Christmas Parade, scheduled Dec. 2.

The theme for this year's parade is "Hometown Christmas."

All clubs, organizations, churches, schools and businesses are encouraged to participate in the parade. Anyone interested can email NLRChristmasParade@gmail.com for entry forms and parade guidelines. All forms must be returned by Nov. 26.

The parade is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. Dec. 2 at the intersection of Pershing Boulevard and Willow Street and proceed south on Main Street into the downtown Argenta District. The parade is estimated to end at 5 p.m.

The parade is sponsored by the North Little Rock Sertoma Club, the city of North Little Rock and the North Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Downtown theater to host annual event

Tickets are available for the North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce's annual dinner show and silent auction, called "A Night at ACT" this year, held Dec. 4 at the Thea Foundation and the Argenta Community Theater.

A reception and silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. at the Thea Foundation, 401 Main St., with the performance of A Christmas Carol at 7 p.m. at the Argenta Community Theater, 405 Main St.

Because this year's event is at the Argenta theater instead of the larger Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock, there are a limited number of tickets.

Tickets are $45, which includes food, drinks and the show ticket. Sponsorships are also available.
