Wrecks in state kill nine people; four of them on one day

Two children die in one crash

Nine people died in traffic accidents in the latter half of last week, four of them on Thursday, according to Arkansas State Police reports.

Two minors were killed just after 6 p.m. Thursday when the Mitsubishi they were in veered off of Hempstead County Road 324 and flipped over, according to a state police crash summary.

The children's names and ages were not listed, but the report said they were a boy and a girl. Both were listed as passengers in the vehicle.

A 26-year-old Conway man died Thursday after the driver of a GMC Sierra truck hit his motorcycle at Lakeview Drive and Gapview Road, state police reported.

Travis Dunham was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the truck was uninjured, the report said.

Also Thursday, an Alabama man died in Ashley County after his car ran off Arkansas 173 and overturned, ejecting him, state police reported.

Brandon White, 30, of Rainbow City, Ala., was driving north on the highway about 4:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, state police reported.

On Friday, Linda M. Robinson, 68, of El Dorado died just after noon after she pulled out of her driveway in front of a vehicle driven by an 84-year-old woman also of El Dorado, state police reported.

Robinson was traveling on U.S. 167 near El Dorado. The other driver was airlifted to UAMS Medical Center for medical treatment.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, a Texas man died after his vehicle struck a tree near Fayetteville, according to state police reports.

Rodney Dale Irion, 57, of Runaway, Texas, was traveling on Arkansas 45 near Fayetteville when his Honda left the roadway and ran into some woods, troopers reported.

Irion was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead, state police reported.

Just after 2 p.m. Friday, a 77-year-old Memphis woman died after the vehicle she was driving attempted to cross some railroad tracks and hit a southbound train, according to state police.

Carole M. Perry was traveling on Cross County Road 358 near Vanndale when she and a second woman, a passenger in her Subaru Forrester, were involved in the crash, troopers reported.

Perry died, and the other woman was taken to Regional One Health Medical Center, according to the report.

On Saturday two people died in traffic crashes.

A Dover man died after a crash about 1:20 a.m. on a gravel road near Dover, state police reported.

David Billingsley, 18, died when a pickup he was riding in rolled over and struck an embankment on Treat Road. A second person in the pickup, also 18, was injured. Both were listed as passengers in the vehicle.

About an hour later, a Hot Springs man died after his vehicle left Arkansas 7 south near Mt. Riante Road and crashed into some trees, reports said.

A state police crash summary report said Larry Hamilton, 65, died in a single-person crash at 2:38 a.m.

Road conditions were reported as dry and clear in all of the crashes.
