Authorities: Little Rock man who reported gunfire didn't realize he'd been shot until later in day

A man who reported gunfire to Little Rock police did not realize he had been shot until officers had left and he had returned home, according to a report.

George Fowlkes, 36, of Little Rock told authorities he heard gunshots around noon Tuesday while working on a home in the 2600 block of Abigail Street.

Fowlkes did not realize he had been shot while at the scene with officers, the report states. It wasn't until he returned home that he noticed the wound on his lower left leg, with the bullet still lodged inside, police said. He called authorities Wednesday afternoon to report the injury.

Little Rock police spokesman Eric Barnes said a delayed response to injury is sometimes common among shooting victims.

"Adrenaline was kicking in, and maybe he just didn't feel it," he said.

Authorities did not immediately suspect anything suspicious in the man's account but will continue to interview him, Barnes said.

No suspect had been named in the shooting, and no arrest had been made at the time of the report.
