49-year-old inmate dies in state prison

A state inmate was pronounced dead at a maximum security prison over the weekend, according to a release by Department of Correction.

Staff at the Maximum Security Unit in Tucker found David Mulkey, 49, unresponsive in his cell just before 3 p.m. Sunday, Solomon Graves, a spokesman for the Department of Correction, said. Graves said Mulkey was taken to the unit infirmary, where he was pronounced dead.

The Arkansas State Police and the Department of Correction will conduct investigations into the death, Graves said.

Mulkey, who was serving a life sentence from Pulaski County for first-degree murder, was the second inmate to die in a week.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story misidentified the number of inmate deaths at the Maximum Security Unit. Mulkey died there, and a second inmate died at the nearby Tucker Unit days earlier.
