Separate shootings hurt 2 people in Little Rock

Two people, one of them a 16-year-old boy, were injured in separate shootings in Little Rock on Sunday night, police said.

According to a Little Rock Police Department report, the teenager was shot shortly before 11:30 p.m. while in a vehicle near a dead end in the 5500 block of Baseline Road. The victim told police that he and another teen had been driving in the area when they saw five men outside their car. One of the men fired into the vehicle before running away with the other four, the victim reportedly told authorities.

Police said the victim, who appeared to have been shot in his left calf, was transported to Arkansas Children's Hospital.

The report didn't indicate a possible motive for the shooting.

One suspect was listed on the report, though there was no indication an arrest had been made.

About an hour earlier, Anthony Rozier, 25, was shot while driving north on Monroe Street near 22nd Avenue, according to a separate Little Rock Police Department report. Rozier told investigators he heard gunfire and saw two unknown males running from the area.

The Little Rock Fire Department treated Rozier on the scene before he was transported to UAMS Medical Center. Rozier's injury was not considered life-threatening and he was in stable condition, the report said.

Shoplifter hit with raw meat by guard

A security officer hit a woman with a piece of raw meat that the woman stole from a Little Rock grocery store, authorities said.

The 42-year-old officer told police he was working security at Shopper Value Foods, 6800 Colonel Glenn Road, when he noticed a woman enter the store with an empty purse about 4 p.m. Sunday.

When she tried to leave with a purse full of meat valued at $50, the man asked to look inside, according to a report from the Little Rock Police Department. The woman then punched him in the face and ran outside the store.

Police wrote that the officer followed her into the parking lot and grabbed her purse. The shoplifter released her bag and turned around holding a pocket knife, the report states.

She dropped the knife when the officer hit her with a piece of meat that had been in her purse, police wrote, noting the woman then took off running down Colonel Glenn Road.

The shoplifter is described as a black woman standing about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds.

Deputies say driver tried to strike them

Deputies in central Arkansas fired upon a man who drove toward them Sunday night, authorities said, noting the man suffered minor injuries but was not shot.

Pulaski County sheriff's office deputies were trying to serve four felony warrants just before 10 p.m. Sunday at a residence in the 6600 block of Beverly Street near Jacksonville, according to a news release.

Deputies wrote that they saw a man, later identified as 33-year-old Brandon Caldwell, trying to flee in a vehicle. As they approached on foot, Caldwell tried to run over them, Lt. Cody Burk wrote in the release.

Deputies fired several shots into the vehicle, and Caldwell was arrested when the vehicle came to a stop, the release states.

He was not directly hit by a bullet, but some shrapnel did cause minor injuries, Burk said. He was also bitten by a K-9.

Records show Caldwell was booked into the Pulaski County jail on charges of criminal attempt to commit capital murder, aggravated assault and other misdemeanor offenses.
