Arkansas woman, 65, dies after being struck by car

A 65-year-old Arkansas woman died from injuries she suffered when she was hit by a car in Fort Smith, authorities said.

Esperanza Ramirez-Martinez was attempting to cross the 1600 block of Grand Avenue around 7 p.m. Saturday when she was hit by an eastbound Chevy Malibu, according to an Arkansas State Police report released on Thursday.

Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry, but the report noted that the stretch of road is "dimly lit."

Ramirez-Martinez was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock, where she died the next day, an official with the Pulaski County coroner's office said.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

At least 399 people have died in wrecks on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
