Kickoff Cocktail Party gets documentary festival going

HOT SPRINGS -- Opening night of the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival began with the Southern Comfort Kickoff Cocktail Party on Oct. 19. The event for sponsors and distinguished guests was held at the lavish townhouse of Suellen and Davis Tillman.

Guests included directors Sally Rubin and Ashley York with the opening-night film Hillbilly and actor Billy Redden -- known as Banjo Boy in the movie Deliverance -- who is featured in the documentary. Also in attendance with his family was Kaspar Schroder of Denmark, last year's winner of the festival's Jury Prize for best international documentary.

Partygoers enjoyed mixed drinks with Tito's vodka and passed Southern-inspired appetizers including shrimp and grits and deviled eggs.

This is the 27th year for the festival, which is the oldest North American all-documentary film festival.
