Collision on highway in Arkansas kills woman, injures 1

A 67-year-old woman died after her pickup hit a van Friday and traveled into a ditch, Arkansas State Police said.

The collision happened at 10 a.m. on U.S. 62 in the Fulton County city of Salem, according to a report from state police.

Troopers wrote that Kathryn Vanliew of Salem was driving a 2003 Chevrolet S10 east when the vehicle veered off the highway and hit a Mazda van on Bent Wood Lane as it waited to turn onto U.S. 62.

The pickup hit the van in the front left door, which caused both vehicles to travel down an embankment and into a ditch, the report states.

Salem police said Vanliew was airlifted to an area hospital, where she died Saturday morning from her injuries. The van's driver, 45-year-old Andrea Wolverton of Cherokee Village, was listed as injured.

Conditions were described as cloudy and dry at the time of the wreck.

At least 405 people have died in crashes on Arkansas roads so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
