MEN'S GOLF

Arkansas men move to fourth place

Luis Garza shot a bogey-free 5-under 67 on Saturday as the University of Arkansas shot a 13-under 347 as a team to move into fourth place at the Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Oklahoma shot a 24-under 336 and leads the tournament by 21 strokes over Georgia and by 29 strokes over third-place Oklahoma State. Arkansas is fourth with TCU, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State rounding out the team standings after the second day.

Garza climbed nine spots individually to tie for seventh with a two-day total of 137 (70-67). Mason Overstreet is tied for 11th after shooting rounds of 68-70 for a 138. Tyson Reeder and William Buhl (141) are tied for 22nd place.

Hendrix beats Lyon to open its season

Hendrix College scored 20 of its 37 points in the first quarter Saturday and led 30-10 early in the third quarter, then held on as Lyon College scored 17 unanswered points in a 37-27 victory in the Warriors’ season opener at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium in Conway.

Quarterback Miles Thompson hit Daylen Johnson for a 5-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring for the Warriors (1-0), capping a nine-play, 69-yard drive in just under three minutes. Sandy Burks added field goals of 22 and 44 yards, and Kip VanHoose added an 85-yard touchdown run as Hendrix built a 20-0 lead with 1:49 left in the first quarter.

Lyon (1-1) answered with a 49-yard touchdown pass from Josh Sierra to Emetrious Scott to cut the lead to 20-7. Burks and Lyon’s Ignacio Gomez then traded field goals as Hendrix led 23-10 at halftime.

Thompson threw his second touchdown pass, a 52-yarder to Michael Spainho just over two minutes into the third quarter to expand the lead to 30-10. Gomez kicked a 45-yard field goal to cut the lead to 30-13 with 7:02 left in the third quarter.

Travis England scored on a 2-yard run with 9:32 left as the Warriors moved ahead 37-13. Titus Nelson scored on a 3-yard run and Jacquez Parker scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Spencer Childress to close the scoring for Lyon.

VOLLEYBALL

UCA sweeps Saturday matches

The University of Central Arkansas defeated Memphis in straight sets and Florida A&M in five sets Saturday at the Skyhawk Invitational in Martin, Tenn.

Haley Tippett led the Sugar Bears (5-2) with 20 kills and a career-high 27 digs in the victory against Florida A&M, while Savanah Allen added 13 kills and 10 blocks.

ASU falls in five sets

Arkansas State University battled back from a two-set deficit Saturday to force a deciding fifth set before falling to North Carolina State at the SMU Doubletree Classic in Dallas.

Carlisa May had 21 kills and a career-high 14 digs to lead the Red Wolves (2-4), while Madison Turner added 7 kills on a team-best .417 hitting percentage. Timber Terrell had a career-high 8 blocks, Tatum Ticknor recorded 20 digs and Ellie Watkins added 40 assists for ASU.

UAFS rally falls short

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith rallied to force a fifth-set tiebreaker Saturday, but fell to Tarleton State at the Desert Garden Inn Classic in St. George, Utah.

Taylor Stoops led the Lady Lions (5-3) with 46 assists and 15 digs. Pilar Onstad also had 15 digs, while Anna Demmer added 10 kills and 14 digs.

Arkansas Tech loses

Tymber Riley and Mackenzie Eford each had a team-high 13 kills, Amanda Milnick dished out 46 assists and Meredith Darnell added a team-high 24 digs as Arkansas Tech University (3-4) lost in five sets to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at the Holiday Inn Classic in Cleveland, Tenn.

Allie Anderson had 12 kills and Hunter Eshnaur added 10 for the Golden Suns. Milnick also had 14 digs and 9 kills, while Eshnaur added 19 digs and Riley had 14.

Harding loses two matches

Harding University lost consecutive five-set matches Saturday to Wisconsin-Parkside and Winona State in Indianapolis.

Madison Poen led Harding with 12 kills and 17 digs in the loss to Wisconsin-Parkside, while Rachel Heussner added 44 assists and 18 digs. Poen had 11 kills and a season-high 20 digs in the loss to Winona State. Taylor Lake had a season-high 32 digs, and Zoe Hardin led Harding with a season-high 18 kills.

MEN'S SOCCER

OBU men win again

The Ouachita Baptist University men's team defeated Rogers State 2-0 on Saturday, scoring both goals early in both halves.

Abraham Lazo shot the ball from the right side of the 6-yard box and curved the ball into the left post to put OBU ahead 1-0 early in the first half. Collen Clark also scored from the right side early in the second half for the Tigers' second goal.

Harding men post shutout

Jack Savage scored in the 54th minute Saturday to give Harding a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma Christian in Edmond, Okla.

Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Anthony Trabichet saved Christian Ramos' shot on a free kick in the 54th minute, but Savage knocked home the rebound. Harding goalkeeper Michael Wasson made two saves in each half for the 13th shutout of his career, extending his own school record.
