Time to clean it up

I just returned from vacation and traveled in five states and across the northern border into Canada. I saw panhandlers/beggars at intersections on two occasions: the day I left Little Rock and the day I returned.

It is time for city leaders to get a handle on this "eyesore" to the city of Little Rock.

To prevent shootings

In an August Sunday edition of this paper, there was an important article about the status of "gun reform" in Arkansas. It even had a list of things that could be considered for that purpose. As it turned out, not much was being worked on. Legislators weren't feeling much pressure.

Now, with another mass shooting in Florida (and a scare in Little Rock), it's time for some change. When I heard about this latest shooter's mental health history (hospitalized more than once), I thought: "How did this guy ever get to buy a gun?" Isn't this how we continue to expose Americans of all ages to gun violence?

So when the General Assembly meets early next year, let's ask them to consider--from the aforementioned list--the two "easiest" measures to achieve: universal background checks and a waiting period for gun purchases. Encourage our representatives to help create and support such legislation. Let's then all work to get these two measures passed. Consider them as our necessary preventive medicine: that they at least help keep mass shootings from happening here.

Situation seems fishy

Somebody hiding something? The Henderson State University Board of Trustees has issued what appears to be a gag order on several of its members who are asking questions about how the university fell into financial hard times. Board member Eddie Arnold wants to know and has been seeking answers.

Not so fast, Eddie. Old "conduct guidelines" have been dusted off and are now required to be followed by all board members. To wit, don't plan any unescorted visits to the campus without an approved docent. And no talking to the press without clearing it with the top man. Wow, some transparency.

Transparency? What are they trying to hide?
