The Bella Vista Garden Club promotes and rewards exemplary yard care in Bella Vista and recognizes neighbors who demonstrate above-average efforts in maintaining their property, which contributes to the overall appearance of the community at large. All homes and businesses in Bella Vista are eligible. Nominations are for the front and side yards jointly. The Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists will host a "Mushroom Walk" to be guided by Fred Spiegel, distinguished professor and director of undergraduate research at the University of Arkansas, from 3 to 5 p.m.Sept. 9. The walk will follow Leatherwood Trail from the ball fields to Lake Leatherwood and back, looking for and identifying various mushrooms and other fungi along the way.

Although the trail is relatively flat and easy, participants are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and bring water to drink. There is no charge for the event, and the public is invited. Meet in the parking lot at the Leatherwood ball fields to begin the walk at 3 p.m.

The Fayetteville Newcomers Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2925 N. Old Missouri Road in Fayetteville, for coffee, refreshments and a monthly program.

The program this month, Washington Regional Faith in Action, features guest speaker Jaclyn Keeter, director of development and outreach services. She will be providing information about the volunteer-based organization which helps home-bound seniors with free nonmedical services. This organization was selected as the Fayetteville Newcomers Club service project for 2018-19. Newcomers to the area (and established residents too) are invited to attend.

Bella Vista's American Legion executive and house committees, as well as the general membership meeting, for Post 341 will be held Sept. 10. The executive committee meeting will begin at 5 p.m. with the general meeting at 6:30 p.m.Both meetings will be held at the Post hall located at 1889 Bella Vista Way in Bella Vista.

In addition to meetings, the post hosts several events including coffee with the commander for members on the first and third Saturday mornings of each month. On the second and fourth Saturday mornings, a breakfast buffet is open to members and the public. Lunches are served Tuesday through Friday each week from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. These lunches feature a casual-themed menu which is available to the public as well as members.

Additionally, the post hosts Taco Tuesday each week followed by Fish Friday. Wednesday nights are devoted to trivia contests with Thursday nights karaoke. Saturday evenings are dance nights beginning at 7 p.m. All events are open to members and the public.

The Bella Vista Computer Club monthly meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Community Room A/Room 1001, on the lower level of the Highlands Crossing Center, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd. in Bella Vista. This month there will be a presentation "Roku: Part 2 and More" by club member Woody Ogden, who will cover other ways to stream content to an HDTV that is not a Smart TV. Also, this month the club will raffle a 32-inch Sharp television that was used for the July meeting. You must be a member to win.

Writers & Poets

The Village on the Lakes Writers and Poets, a local writers group, meets from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month at the Artist Retreat Center, 13467 Lookout Drive in Old Bella Vista. Guests are welcome.

The Ko-ko-ci Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Arkansas Archeological Survey building, 2475 N. Hatch Ave. in Fayetteville. Guest speakers will be Scott Hammerstedt and Amanda Regnier from the Oklahoma Archeological Survey. They will present "Preliminary Results of the Monte Albán Geophysical Project." This event is free and open to the public.

The Iota Alpha chapter of Beta Sigma Phi will meet at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at Guaranty Bank on U.S. 71 south in Pineville, Mo. The service project for September will be a monetary donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Bella Vista. The social activity for the month will be a trip to the Old Spanish Treasure Cave near Sulphur Springs.

Nature Society

The Flower, Garden and Nature Society of Northwest Arkansas will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 for a program titled "Meat, Meal and Molasses: Heirloom Eatin' in the Ozarks." Susan Young, outreach coordinator for Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, will give a slide presentation on traditional Ozark foodways, featuring images from Shiloh Museum's photo collection.

The Northwest Arkansas Ostomy Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Sept. 16 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. The educational meeting will begin at 1 p.m.



Orchid Society of the Ozarks' annual orchid auction will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. Preview starts at noon. Hundreds of exotic plants from around the world will be available for bidding. Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend. The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and occasional public auctions offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery is a Children's Treehouse Foundation family support group that helps children ages 6 to 12 cope with and share feelings about a parent or loved one who has cancer. The next group will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. every Monday from Sept. 17 to Oct. 22 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Registration is required.

Viviendo con Cancer is a supportive and educational group for adult Hispanic patients, caregivers, families and friends coping with any type of cancer. All group communications will be in Spanish.
