5-year-old accidentally shoots, kills himself in Little Rock home, police say

A 5-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself Saturday night with a gun he found in his home, Little Rock authorities said.

Police spokesman Lt. Michael Ford said officers were called about 8 p.m. to 5207 Wycliffe Drive in southwest Little Rock, where the boy — identified as Brennen Esau — was found critically injured. Ford later confirmed the child had died.

No adults were at home at the time of the shooting, Ford said, but the boy was with three siblings, aged 14, 10 and 6.

About 9 p.m. Saturday, several people stood in the rain on Wycliffe Drive watching as officers and detectives moved in and out of the two-story brick house. Under an umbrella, a woman hugged a crying boy.

Rodney Barefield, who described himself as a former neighbor and a close friend of the family, said the 5-year-old was one of five boys in the family. Barefield said their mother had called him just after 8 p.m. to say her son had been shot.
