HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS STATE GOLF TOURNAMENT CLASS 2A

Pigott misses goal, settles for a title

BISMARCK -- Sidney Pigott was hoping she would shoot an 80 or better on the DeGray Lake Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon. She had to settle for the Class 2A girls state tournament medalist honors.

Pigott, a senior from Camden Harmony Grove, fired an 18-over 90 on the 5,115-yard course and was three strokes better than Melbourne's Addie Harris and Halle Cooper.

"My putting killed me today," said Pigott, who shot an 81 on the DeGray Lake course last year. "And I stayed in the trees. I think I just lucked out on a couple of holes."

Pigott's round included one birdie, six pars, four bogeys, six double bogeys and one triple bogey, but on a soggy playing surface, she stayed away from a major meltdown on a course that saw only seven of 62 golfers shoot under 100.

"I was going to shoot 80 today. That was the plan," Pigott said. "But I went 10 over instead."

Melbourne claimed its second consecutive title by shooting a 283. Camden Harmony Grove was second with a 288.

Harris and Cooper both shot 93s. Laurie Ledbetter of Camden Harmony Grove fired a 95, and Katelyn Ross of Eureka Springs turned in a 96.

Harris, a junior who played in the same group as Pigott, shot three strokes better than the eventual winner on the back nine, but she had too much ground to make up after firing a 50 on the front half.

Harris said being unfamiliar with the course hurt her chances of catching Pigott.

"We've never played this course. We're not from here," Harris said. "This is a lot longer than our home course. It was really challenging, but I think we all did a great job of handling it.

"I hit my driver really well, but I wish I could have played my other shots better. That's the name of the game, putting and chipping. If you're a master around the green, you can manage anything."

Cooper, a senior, celebrated her 18th birthday by earning a spot in the Overall tournament in two weeks.

"This is our second year in a row to win a team championship, and it's just crazy that we got to do it," Cooper said. "We have a strong team, and it's been great to play with them these last two years."
