Accounting added to online degrees

FAYETTEVILLE -- A new online bachelor's degree program in accounting is being offered, the sixth undergraduate degree program offered online by the university.

"With our online programs, we provide opportunities for students to pursue a degree whether they are new to college, completing a degree they may have started years ago, or seeking an additional degree to enhance their skillset," Matt Waller, dean of the Sam M. Walton College of Business, said in a statement.

The university's first online bachelor's degree program began in fall 2012, enrolling registered nurses to earn bachelor's degrees in nursing. Other online bachelor's programs are in human resource and workforce development, general business, interdisciplinary studies and communication.

The five previous online bachelor's degree programs have a preliminary fall enrollment of 666 students, according to information provided by UA. The new accounting program expects to enroll its first online, degree-seeking students this spring, said Kay Murphy, communications director of the Global Campus. Graduate degree and certificate programs also are offered.

Suspect is arrested in thefts of scooters

FAYETTEVILLE -- A Fayetteville man arrested last month on campus has admitted to stealing scooters, police said in a statement.

Tyler Brady was being held as of Friday in the Washington County jail on multiple counts of theft of property as well as other charges.

Police first arrested Brady on an unrelated warrant after spotting him about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at a campus parking lot. He was found with a screwdriver and a hex key, Capt. Gary Crain said.

After Brady's arrest, police reviewed surveillance video and identified him as a suspect in scooter thefts. Under questioning, "Brady has admitted to stealing twenty to thirty scooters," police said in a statement, adding that charges are expected in 16 thefts.

Crain said he did not have a precise count on scooters recovered, but some were found after being moved from one spot on campus to another. A total of 48 scooter thefts have been reported to the university police since Jan. 1, including more than 20 since the start of classes Aug. 20, according to the department.

New chief sought again at art school

FAYETTEVILLE -- A new national posting will advertise the director position that's open in the School of Art, said Kayla Crenshaw, the school's communications director.

"The job description is being updated. As soon as it is completed the job will be posted," Crenshaw said in an email.

Last year, the university announced a $120 million gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation to expand arts education, plus another $40 million gift from the Windgate Charitable Foundation for arts facilities.

The search for a director will resume after an earlier effort to land a top leader came up empty. Two finalists for the director position, Elizabeth Mansfield and Andrew Schulz, accepted jobs at other universities. Schulz joined the University of Arizona, while Mansfield is at Pennsylvania State University.

Mathew McConnell, an art faculty member since 2011, is the school's interim director.
