Elkins district gives raises for next school year

ELKINS -- The School Board on Monday approved 1.2 percent raises for most employees effective next school year.

A few classified positions needed a bit more than the 1.2 percent increase to keep up with changes to the state's minimum wage law, said Superintendent Jeremy Mangrum.

The School District has 167 certified and classified employees and serves about 1,270 students. The raises will add $142,000 to next year's budget, Mangrum said. The minimum starting salary for an Elkins teacher will increase from $34,301 to $34,712.

This is the first time in two years Elkins has granted employees a raise, although the board approved a 2 percent bonus for all staff members in November.

"I know our board is happy and I'm happy when we're in a situation we can increase our salary schedule and reward our employees," Mangrum said.
