Sanchez, Cowan spur Travelers to win over Naturals

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Jordan Cowan singled three times, and Ricardo Sanchez allowed just two hits over seven innings as the Arkansas Travelers defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 2-0 on Tuesday.

Sanchez (3-0) struck out seven and walked one to get the win.

Arkansas scored its runs when Donnie Walton hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Walton hit an RBI single in the seventh.

Gerson Garabito (0-1) went six innings, allowing one run and five hits to take the tough loss in the Texas League game. He also struck out five and walked two.

The Naturals were held scoreless for the second time this season, while the Travelers’ staff recorded their third shutout of the year.

With the win, Arkansas remains undefeated (5-0) against NW Arkansas this season.

CORPUS CHRISTI 8, FRISCO 6

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Joshua Rojas hit a run-scoring fielder’s choice in the first inning, leading the Corpus Christi Hooks to an 8-6 win over the Frisco RoughRiders on Tuesday.

The fielder’s choice, part of a three-run inning, gave the Hooks a 1-0 lead before J.J. Matijevic hit a two-run double later in the inning.

After Corpus Christi added four runs, the RoughRiders cut into the deficit with five runs in the sixth inning, including two RBI each from Juremi Profar and Brendon Davis.

The Hooks tacked on another run in the eighth when Granden Goetzman hit a solo home run.

Frisco saw its comeback attempt come up short after Tony Sanchez hit an RBI single, scoring Christian Lopes in the ninth inning to cut the Corpus Christi lead to 8-6.

Colin McKee (2-1) got the win in relief while Frisco starter Brock Burke (0-2) took the loss in the Texas League game. Profar doubled twice and singled, driving home two runs for the RoughRiders. Charles Leblanc singled three times.

MIDLAND 6, AMARILLO 2

MIDLAND, Texas — Edwin Diaz hit a grand slam in the seventh inning, leading the Midland RockHounds to a 6-2 win over the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Tuesday.

The grand slam by Diaz capped a five-run inning and gave the RockHounds a 5-2 lead after Collin Theroux drew a bases-loaded walk earlier in the inning. The RockHounds tacked on another run in the eighth when Nate Mondou drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Mikey White.

Angel Duno (1-0) got the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief while Nick Kuzia (0-1) took the loss in the Texas League game.

Jorge Ona singled twice, also stealing a base for the Sod Poodles.

Midland improved to 4-1 against Amarillo this season.

TULSA 11, SPRINGFIELD 0

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Zach Reks homered and singled twice, scoring a couple of runs while also driving home two as the Tulsa Drillers defeated the Springfield Cardinals 11-0 on Tuesday. With the loss, the Cardinals snapped a five-game winning streak.

DJ Peters homered and doubled with three RBIs and two runs for Tulsa.

Tulsa had a pair of big innings in the blowout victory, scoring four runs in the second inning and five in the fourth. In the second, Dustin May hit a two-run single, while Reks hit a two-run home run in the fourth.

Tulsa starter May (1-0) picked up the win after allowing three hits over five scoreless innings. Opposing starter Evan Kruczynski (0-1) took the loss in the Texas League game after a rough outing in which he allowed seven runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals were blanked for the first time this season, while the Drillers’ staff also registered their first shutout of the year.

With the win, Tulsa improved to 4-1 against Springfield this season.
