SEFOR 'celebration' on tap at Strickler Fire Department

FAYETTEVILLE -- A meeting scheduled as the final update on the cleanup of a former nuclear reactor test site will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Strickler Fire Department community center.

Billed also as a celebration, refreshments and barbecue will be available starting at 5 p.m. as work winds down at the Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor site about 20 miles southwest of Fayetteville.

All radioactive material has been removed from the site, according to the University of Arkansas, which owns the property. Final approval of the cleanup remains pending from the state Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Department of Energy.

A $10.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy announced in October 2016 jump-started site work overseen by Utah-based EnergySolutions. Total project cost has been estimated at about $26 million, with additional federal money paying for the project.

John Sauger, an executive with EnergySolutions, along with a representative from the U.S. Department of Energy will be at the Thursday event.
